Film Studies A Level at Sunderland College

Course description

This course is for film enthusiasts interested in developing their understanding of how film, as an art form, creates meaning and how the film industry functions.

It’’s a fantastic starting point for a career in film or other media production, journalism/creative writing, marketing & advertising.


Course content

This course looks at film as an art form. In the first year you’ll study the creative and production skills needed to develop your own short films, how film constructs meaning and raises social issues as well as the US and UK film industries.

In the second year you’ll develop critical abilities studying issues raised in urban world cinema, investigate the relationship between film producers and the meanings they intend and how audiences respond to emotional and controversial cinema.


Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including a C in English Language or Literature.


This course uses a combination of theoretical and practical study. You will study the theory parts in a classroom environment incorporating a range of learning activities, and practical components will involve research and editing workshops and using specialist software in a computer room.

An A-level in Film Studies can help you move on to higher education courses at university including film studies, journalism, communications, teaching, media production and other related fields.

    • Washington Campus an award winning campus that is home to Washington Sixth Form and our higher education provision. Located between Gateshead and Washington it was built on the site of the former Usworth School. It was developed to cater for up to 850 people from in or around the Washington area.

      The £10 million development provides an excellent learning environment for both academic and vocational course for 16 to 18 year old students, and also acts as our ICT specialist centre.
