Sport - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences at Wakefield College
The role and impact of sport science in sport has seen a revolutionary development over the last decade. There is an increasing awareness of the importance of scientific principles and enquiry in attaining optimum sport performance. Wakefield College has
a long tradition of academic provision in Sport Science which is continually developing. Despite its status and significance within sport, sport science is still an emerging field that provides challenging and rewarding career progressions.
The course not only serves as a route to full time employment within sports related fields, it is also a proven progression route to Higher Education. This may be full degree status programmes at Universities or continuation at Wakefield College studying on our Foundation Degree programme.
What you will study
A mix of theory and practice, relating to sport, exercise and physical education, this course includes a variety of units that offers students the opportunity to develop a multi-disciplinary understanding in relation to sport science, health & well being.
The course is divided into units of study that are taught over two years. Units include:
Anatomy for sport & exercise
Sports & exercise physiology
Fitness training and programming
Practical team sports
Analysis of sports performance
Exercise, health and lifestyle
Your Course Structure
The course has been structured, so that particular interests and career aspirations within the sport and active leisure sector can be reflected in the choice of units.
How you will learn
Units are taught as interactively & practically as possible through a variety of course-work based methods.
5 GCSEs at A*-C or 9-4 including English and Maths and Science/PE.
Assessment methods include:
Interactive media projects
As with all BTEC courses there is a high level of expectation. Students must be well organized and prepared to work to strict deadlines.
Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Each year Wakefield College Sports Science students progress to some of the most reputable Universities in the country, including Leeds Metropolitan, Loughborough, John Moores & Sheffield Hallam, studying a wide range of sports related programmes including Sports Science, Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Sports Coaching and Sports Therapy amongst others.
The career opportunities available to sport and exercise scientists are expanding all the time and this expansion appears likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Most sports now recognise sports science as an integral part of their sport’s development
and success and most athletes consider the application of sport science as an important part of everyday training and competition.
Previous students' career progressions have included careers in teaching, a sports performance analyst in New Zealand and the physiotherapists at Leeds United.
