Mathematical Studies Level 3 Certificate at Durham Sixth Form Centre

Course description

Exam board: AQA Course duration: 2 Years Mathematical Studies is a relatively new course for those who want to keep up their valuable maths skills but who are not planning on taking AS or A-level Mathematics.

Course content

Mathematical Studies has been designed to maintain and develop real-life mathematics skills. Topics studied are not purely theoretical or abstract but can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life. The course has large proportions of Statistics and Financial Mathematics.

This course is suitable for anyone who has studied Higher level GCSE Mathematics. It is a Level 3 Core Mathematics qualification equivalent to an AS level qualification.

Entry requirements

There are a range of courses and pathways available to you at Durham Sixth Form Centre depending on your GCSE results and academic profile. In order to enrol with us as a student, you must have the minimum of 5 A*-C GCSE grades (or equivalent). In addition, individual subjects have specific entry requirements, which will be discussed with you during the application and enrolment process. Students who do not achieve a grade C or above (or numerical equivalent) in GCSE English and/or mathematics will be required to continue studying these subjects at Durham Sixth Form Centre.

The qualification is assessed by final examination at the end of year 13.

The skills developed in the study of Mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education; studying Mathematical Studies will help you keep up these essential skills. On average, studentswho study Mathematics after GCSE improve their career choices and increase their earning prospects.

Further information

Mathematical Studies can help support other A-level subjects that have some mathematical content. In particular it goes well with Sciences, Geography, Business Studies, Psychology and Economics.

    • Durham Sixth Form Centre is located in Durham City Centre next to Gala Square and Freeman’s Quay. We are a couple of minutes walk from both the bus station and the railway station. Our students enjoy having all of the city centre facilities, shops, restaurants, the city library, cinema and theatre on our doorstep. In the city itself, students find a host of lively cultural, social and educational advantages and facilities. The galleries, exhibitions, museums and book shops all play their part in enriching the student experience. A large public car-park is directly opposite and adjacent to Durham Sixth Form Centre’s main entrance.
