Design Technology – Product Design A Level at Ivybridge Community College
This is an exciting course for those interested in the many aspects of graphics, product design and manufacture. Students are encouraged to work in a wide range of materials and will enjoy choosing projects linked to their own interests. The AQA Syllabus has been used as a vehicle for many different types of projects, including furniture design, engineering, textiles and photography.
What will you study?
Assessment units for AS Level are:
Unit 1 – Written Paper 2 hours – 50% of the total marks and 25% of the total A level marks. This question paper covers three main topic areas; 1) Materials, Components and Application. 2) Hand and Commercial Processing. 3) Design, Environment and Ergonomics. Candidates will answer three from a choice of six questions.
Unit 2 – Coursework Approx 50 hours – 50% of the AS marks and 25% of the total A Level marks. This unit consists of a design portfolio and a manufactured outcome.
In order to be considered for an Advanced Subsidiary Course, which leads to a full Advanced Level, students will be expected to have gained an absolute minimum of five GCSE grades at C or above in Mathematics and English, with a minimum of B grades in their chosen subjects having been studied at a higher tier. Students wishing to start this subject would have passed a design-based GCSE course, at grade B or above. An English Language GCSE pass (C or above) is also desirable.
