Course description

The Retail Business Diploma is a practical course designed for young people who have a broad interest and enthusiasm for the Retail Business industries. The Diploma is a new qualification for students aged 14 -19 that is designed to be studied alongside GCSEs. The Diploma offers the opportunity to learn in an exciting, creative and enjoyable way, combining class work with hands on experience. The Diploma at the Foundation level is the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grade D to G. The Diploma course will last for 1 year. How is the Diploma put together? The Diploma is made up of different components that go together to form the whole qualification. Each Diploma contains the same components listed here: * Principal learning – This component develops the knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to your chosen Diploma subject. * Generic learning – This component includes personal learning and thinking skills, a project and a minimum of 10 days work experience. Also included are functional skills in English, mathematics and ICT which will be studied at level 1 if you have not achieved them at school. * Additional/specialist learning – This component gives the opportunity to study a particular topic in more depth or to broaden your studies through a qualification that complements your chosen Diploma subject. The Additional/Specialist allows you to tailor your learning to your own interests and aspirations. A variety of subjects will be available to you such as: Employment Skills, Financial Management, Customer Service, Self Employment, Marketing, Administration, Sales, Human Resources, Business Systems, Business Communication, E-Business, Web Design. The Additional/Specialist learning and Project work for the Retail Business Diploma will take place in a variety of locations in conjunction with the partners for the delivery of the Retail Business Diploma.

Future opportunities

From the Foundation Diploma you can progress to the Higher Diploma, an apprenticeship or employment. Universities and colleges were involved in creating Diplomas, so you will get the skills you need to succeed on a further or higher education course. The Diploma was developed with the help of employers to give you the skills, knowledge and experience you need to do well in the working world. As you get the chance to learn in different settings, including the workplace, you’ll develop skills that employers really value.
