Business Studies OCR National Level 3 at Greig City Academy

Course description

If you have an interest in businesses and how they work.   Or if you are thinking of setting up your own business or working within a business in the future.  Also if your thinking of studying business or an related topic in higher education.

Course content

100% Coursework consisting of  6 assignments based on 6 different topics.

Unit 1 – Investigating Business – Looking at types of business ownership, internal structures of businesses, stakeholder interests in business, legislation that affects business activity, industrial sectors in which businesses exists and ways in which businesses maintain their competitiveness.

Unit 2 – Customer Service – Looking at the benefits of a business providing good customer service, the internal structure of a customer service department, how customer service is adapted to deal with different types of customer and how customer service standards are planned and monitored. You will also be expected to carryout work experience in a customer service department and carryout a customer service role.

Unit 3 – Business communications - You will be producing a variety of written communication, carrying out various research methods, using e-mail for communication purposes, reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of using communication technology. Unit 4 –Finance in business – Looking at profit and loss statements and balance sheets, the interpretation of financial performance, preparation and analysis of a cash flow forecast, the role of the financial institutions within the economy and the impact of the economic environment on a businesses performance.

Unit 5 – Marketing for business - Looking at the elements of the marketing mix, market research, marketing models, pricing strategies, distribution strategies and promotion.                                                                      

Unit 9 – Career planning for business – Looking at national employment trends, career opportunities, career plans, methods of presenting personal information and how to plan for interview.

Entry requirements

The exam board sets no formal entry requirements for this qualification although the school requires at least a grade C at GCSE in business studies or equivalent.

 

Assessment

All units are assessed by your teacher and externally moderated by OCR. There are no timetabled exams for this qualification.

Pass – equivalent of 1 grade E at  A Level

Merit  - equivalent of  1 grade C at A Level

Distinction  - equivalent of 1 grade A at A Level

 

Future opportunities

Those studying in preparation for employment in the business sector particularly in job roles where they will be expected to use communication and IT skills, liaise with customers and carry out customer-facing operational roles.  This qualification is also suitable for those wishing to gain level 3 qualifications to support future study in further or higher education.
