Science at Prince William School

Course content

Science stories hit the news weekly; the perfect baby, energy for the future, GM farming, to name a few. Continuing to study Science at GCSE allows students to gain an insight into these issues and is one of the reasons why GCSE Science is compulsory for all. We build upon the work covered in Key Stage 3 and help you to develop your thinking skills further. The vast majority of our students take Double Science, leading to two GCSEs; one in core Science, one in additional Science. It is essential that you choose this option if you wish to keep all careers options open. Any student wishing to study Science in the Sixth Form or at college must have both core and additional Science GCSEs. We also offer a single GCSE in the core curriculum, although numbers taking up this course tend to be small and usually make up one class only in each year half. This results in the Foundation course only being on offer (maximum grade C). We follow OCR Gateway Science for Core Science (Year 10) and Additional Science (Year 11). The coursework component is worth 331/3%. Marks for this component come from practical tasks and a report on ‘Science in the News’, written under exam conditions. Triple Science This year, we can offer the opportunity for our most able scientists to gain GCSEs in each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The course will start immediately after the Science SATs and will make use of a short GCSE option column. To be accepted for this option, students must have evidence that they are of the right ability, by gaining Level 7 in several end of topic tests and in their SAT mock in February. They should also show that they will be able to keep up with the pace of the learning, by having an exemplary record in meeting deadlines and producing written work of the required standard.
