Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools CACHE Level 3 Diploma at Buxton & Leek College

Course description

This qualification provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills required when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary or special schools. The course is suitable for anyone working in roles that offer specialist support for pupils’ learning. It is suitable for teaching assistants, learning support assistants, parent support advisors, learning mentors or those in similar roles at Level 3. Learners who are not currently employed in this type of work will undertake a voluntary placement in a school setting in order to develop competence in both knowledge and skills.

Course content

The course covers all aspects of Specialist Support including planning, delivering, and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher, bilingual and special needs support and personal development and reflective practice. It is also a must have for all those undertaking the Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning Apprenticeship. 

We’ve had excellent success rates in the last three years. This course gives you the qualification you need to apply for jobs and potentially gain permanent employment. Many of our students are now in employment in a related setting. All our Childcare and Education staff have worked in various childcare and school settings so we have first-hand experience. We are a supportive and approachable team who want you to succeed and have the best experience of college life.

Entry requirements

 You will need to be at least 16 years of age 

• Learners will need to be working or volunteering in a practical placement within a school 

• Learners will be offered an interview to assess their suitability for the course 

• A good standard of English, maths and ICT is required 

• Learners will require a Disclosure and Barring Service check before they commence the course. 

Assessment

All units are assessed by your Tutor and your Assessor. Assessment enables your workplace practice to provide evidence for individual units. Methods of assessment may include: 

• Direct observation of practice 

• Professional discussion 

• Reflection on own practice 

• Written assignments 

• Your own plans and records 

• Tasks set by CACHE. 

Future opportunities

The course can lead to employment as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Parent Support Advisor, Learning Mentor or similar roles at Level 3. You could also progress on to a Foundation Degree at Buxton & Leek College with a related pathway.

      Our Skillsbase Training Centre, based at Harpur Hill on the outskirts of Buxton is the perfect location for motor vehicle, construction, logistics, warehousing and painting and decorating.
