Course description

If you have a desire to work in the scientific field then this may be the course for
you. The applied science industry sector offers huge potential for learners
interested in lab - based work and in areas such as renewable energy, space, low
carbon, pharmaceuticals, utilities, automotive, agri‐food and bioscience

Course content

What will you be learning?

You will be assessed through the production of a portfolio of evidence that meets the assessment criteria for each unit.  Evidence can take many forms including assignments, leaflets, video footage, or presentations.  Assessment will take place at various stages throughout each unit.

Year 12 Units:

Unit 1 - Fundamentals of Science

Unit 2 - Science in the Workplace

Unit 4 - Practical Scientific Techniques

Entry requirements

Level 2 BTEC - Extended Certificate in Applied Science overall Merit or Level 2 BTEC - Principles of Applied Science and Applications of Applied Science - Level 2
Merit or GCSE Science - Additional Science grade C or GCSE Triple Science - CCC.

Assessment

There are no exams.  Students submit a portfolio of evidence for each unit.  This is assessed internally by teaching staff and externally moderated.

The ability to sample and test substances and materials is important in many brances of industry, in research work and in forensic science.
