Computing AS & A Level at King George V College
Computing at KGV boasts an impressive 100% pass rate. The syllabus incorporates a wide variety of topics including conceptual models, problem solving and practical work so that you will develop a wide range of creative focussed analytical and theoretical skills.
Computing A Level is held in high regard by universities on many courses, such as Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Physics and Maths. Computing skills are a shortage area and are in extremely high demand. Many of the skills you will learn on the course are highly specialist and can be developed in multi-disciplinary areas or fields of work.
First Year Modules
- Paper 1: This paper tests a student's ability to program, as well as their theoretical knowledge of computer science :: Assessed• On-screen exam: 1 hour 30 minutes•• 50% of AS
- Paper 2: This paper tests a student's ability to answer ::Assessed• Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes•• 50% of AS
Second Year Modules
- Paper 1: Tests a student's ability to program, as well as theoretical knowledge
On-screen exam: 2 hours 30 minutes
40% of A-level
- Paper 2: Tests a student's ability to answer questions
Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes
40% of A-level
- Non-exam assessment: Coursework problem.
20% of A-level
You will be keen to extend your knowledge within areas of computing that are of personal interest, but should also be open to learning new concepts through researching and sharing ideas. This along with dedication and hard work are notable features of high success. A keen enthusiasm towards problem solving along with a desire to refine, perfect and re-engineer your work are other strengths of a good student.
Computing helps provide you with many transferable skills that will be of use in almost all professions.
Many students go on to university to study Computing or a related subject. Note that A-level. Mathematics is required for some courses such as Computer Science. The Computing A-level is highly regarded by universities in related subject areas, such as engineering and physics.
The growth of the Internet and the needs of large and small organisations mean that the demand for well-qualified personnel continues to outstrip supply. Computer programmers are in high demand.
Software engineering, programming, web page design and systems analysis form the core destinations for graduates.
There are plenty of opportunities to hone and develop your range of computing skills whilst studying at KGV. Key skills acquired in lessons can be adopted by students in their own areas of interest. Plus, we have enrichment activities where students learn to program in other languages, for instance php.
