History A Level at The Broxbourne School

Course description

This ‘A’ level broadly examines the themes of political change and challenges to an authoritarian state. It seeks to instil the
skills of critical thinking and the formation of an evidence based argument. To study ‘A’ Level History you should be prepared
to read, think and evaluate the views of others and your own.
In Year 12, the AS course covers the following:
Unit 1: From Autocracy to Communism: Russia 1894-1941
Students trace the political, social and economic history of the USSR; from the attempts of Tsar Nicholas II to address
Russia’s deep rooted problems at the turn of the 20th Century, through the impact of WWI, to the formation of the Communist
state under Lenin and Stalin.
Unit 2: Mid-Tudor Crisis 1536-69
This unit focuses on the theme of change. It covers the political, religious, economic and social crises faced by the English
monarchy from 1536-69.
In Year 13, the A2 course covers the following:
Unit 3: Coursework: Nazi Germany 1933-45
Students will complete two pieces of written coursework that focus on the nature of Nazi Government, its impact on Germany
and the extent of the social revolution it brought about. Students cover the racial aims and policies of the Nazi Government
as well as the nature and extent of opposition to the regime.
Students also have the opportunity to choose a topic in history to investigate and produce a 2,000 word assignment.
Unit 4: Rebellion & Disorder under The Tudors 1485-1603
This unit focuses on the nature and extent of rebellion and disorder in England and Ireland during the Tudor dynasty. It
covers the causes, frequency and nature of the disturbances, their impact on Tudor Governments and how the state
attempted to maintain political stability.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements to The Broxbourne School Sixth Form are based on both the average KS4 points achieved in the summer of year 11 and specific grades gained in subjects relevant to those that they wish to pursue in the Sixth Form. Students are expected to take four AS subjects and AS General Studies in Year 12 and should have demonstrated a consistently serious attitude to study.
To enter the Sixth Form to study 4 or 5 AS / A-level courses students should have achieved at least 5+ A* - C grades including English and Maths, must have demonstrated a consistently serious attitude to study and
• gained an average points score of 43 points or more and,
• achieved the entry grade B in the GCSE subject they wish to study at AS / A-level or in the case of subjects not taken at GCSE the entry grade in related subjects
• achieve at least an A in GCSE Maths to take AS level Maths
