Art (Fine Art) AS and A Level at Portsmouth College
Fine Art offers excellent opportunities to use and develop your imaginative and creative talents. It combines well with most other subjects, although students looking for careers in specific fields of artistic design often choose to take one or two other courses in the creative arts portfolio.
Fine Art students work with a range of drawing and painting media and techniques, including: pen, graphite, watercolour, ink acrylics, collage and mixed media. This course is recommended for students who enjoy devising creative work from observation and who are also comfortable with the use of a broad range of media and methods. The course includes two dimensional and some three dimensional work and allows for creative and experimental work in, for example: painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, textile techniques, printing and illustration.
You would normally be expected to have at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English Language), some at grade B or above. Level 2 BTEC or OCR National qualifications (at Merit grade or higher) would be a useful addition but cannot be used instead of the basic GCSE requirement.
The course is assessed through practical projects but please bear in mind that many of these also involve a significant proportion of written work.
You can choose to participate in one of our various commercial or community projects. In recent years College students have won design competitions for ‘Sea Britain’ banners and Mambo Surfboards, and been involved in community art projects on behalf of local hospitals.
