Maths (Express) (AS/A Level) at New College Swindon

Course description

This immensely successful course is designed for those who want to get an A Level in Maths in one year.  Normally, you take this in order to have the option of doing Further Maths (NC135) in Year 2.

You will develop your knowledge of Maths and your skill and confidence in using it in a wide range of situations.

By the end of the course you will be able to use appropriate computer software and technology, use algebraic notation with confidence and competence, analyse real-life problems and discuss mathematical ideas.

Course content

You are actively involved in developing mathematical ideas and, wherever possible, problems arising from everyday life.

You will make appropriate use of modern technology such as graphic calculators and computers.

You will study six modules of work during the course (see the diagram overleaf).  Each module is covered in specially written texts.

There are alternative tasks during each module, both to support the weaker student and to challenge the most able.

Entry requirements

You should have a grade A or A* at GCSE Maths, or have taken GCSE early in school, or you should have studied A Level Maths previously and wish to improve your grade.

Each module has its own final exam.  Most modules allow the use of graphical or scientific calculators.

Exams are 1½ hours, and you may retake them, if necessary.
