Applied Science: Forensics Pathway at North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College

Course description


This course provides you with a solid science base from which to follow your particular interests – either forensics or medical sciences. You will cover several topics which are common to both courses and then later in year 1 you will begin to follow your specialist route. The course is delivered through a combination of class and small group sessions, as well as talks and presentations by visiting speakers and time in the science laboratories. Our courses don’t just stay in the lab, you’ll get to visit Avon and Somerset Police HQ and the fingerprinting bureau to work with crime investigators if you are following the forensics pathway, or you’ll visit Weston and Bristol hospitals and work with practitioners from a range of medical fields if you choose the medical science pathway.

Course content

You will study 18 topics over the two years of the course which include the following core topics:

  • Fundamentals of Science
  • Working in the science industry
  • Scientific investigation
  • Using mathematical tools.

Further specialist units could include several of the following, depending on whether you follow the forensic or medical science pathway:

  • Physiology of human body systems
  • Microbiological techniques
  • Chemical laboratory techniques
  • Criminology
  • Forensic evidence and collection analysis
  • Forensic psychology
  • Traffic accident investigation
  • Fire investigation
  • Criminal investigation practice
  • Genetics and genetic engineering
  • Clinical psychology
  • Diseases and infection
  • Physiology of human regulation and reproduction
  • Physiological investigations
  • Medical instrumentation.

Entry requirements

This is a Level 3 qualification. You will need 5 A*-C GCSEs, including Science grade CC. Duration: 2 years.


You will be assessed through coursework. There are no exams for this course.

Future opportunities

Students who complete this course go on to study degrees in subject areas such as Biomedical Science, the Allied Health professions, Biology, Chemistry, Law, Forensics and Medical Sciences (but not medicine itself). You could progress to a career as a biomedical laboratory technician, as an allied health professional (eg radiographer, speech and language therapist, orthoptist, occupational therapist, prosthetist), as a forensic scientist, chemist, food technologist, medical physicist, research scientist, biochemist, ecologist and within the police force and other public services. This course opens the way for you to pursue a huge range of courses and careers which require a broad science background.

This qualification is equivalent to 3 A Levels.
