History AS Level at Parkside School

Course description

AS level History teaches the student to think for themselves and analyse the stories of the past and inform their judgements of the present.

Course content

Sometimes it's hard to believe; sometimes it's horrifying. History can be stranger than fiction, but it is all about what people did in the past and unravelling their motives. The jewel in the crown of studying History at this level is becoming immersed in a period and not wanting to wait to find out what happened next.

History teaches the student to think for themselves, argue a case supported by evidence and analyse the stories of the past to inform their judgements of the present. The exciting History course deals with a range of significant events and individuals focusing on the diversity of society in three different periods in three different countries, Britain, Russia and America. Over the two years you will have the best creative vehicle - History - to question the good, the great and the ordinary and asks; What impact does History have on the world today?

Entry requirements

Students should ideally achieve a C or above in both History and English at GCSE (however although it is preferable to have studied GCSE history it is not essential.)

Assessment

The Mid Tudor Crisis : 1536-1569

From Autocracy to Communism : Russia 1894 - 1941
