General Studies (AS/A Level) at New College Swindon
The course is designed to:
- encourage your understanding of continuity and change in the modern world
- encourage your appreciation of contemporary issues
- develop your study skills and analysis of chosen issues
- develop clear, accurate and effective written communication of information.
… and is open to all New College students who are taking an Advanced (Level 3) programme.
The two AS units are: Conflict (Unit 1) and Space (Unit 2). The two A2 units are Power (Unit 3) and Change (Unit 4). Each of the units is divided into five areas of study. These are: Science and Technology, Society and Politics, Arts and Media, Business and Industry, Beliefs and Values.
You will have the opportunity of gaining a full A Level in one year, if you wish to ‘Fast-Track’.
You will find it useful if you have a balanced range of GCSEs and you should have GCSE English and Maths (or an equivalent qualification) at grade C in order to maximise your chances of success in the written papers.
You will be encouraged to keep up –to- date with news and current affairs through the many on-line and paper-based news resources now available.
General Studies is now accepted by some Higher Education institutions as part of their entry requirement.
