Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles Apprenticeship City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma at Brooklands College

Course description

This level 3 course is designed to allow a learner to specialise in the area of fault rectification and diagnosis on modern light vehicles. 

You will build on the practical skills and knowledge you have learnt from a level 2 motor vehicle qualification and will be well prepared for moving into the motor vehicle industry as a full-time technician.

This diploma qualification is the technical certificate element of a modern motor vehicle apprenticeship so if you could find work in a garage on completion of the course, you would only need to complete the NVQ and possibly functional skills.

Who is the course suitable for?
Apprentices who are working in the motor vehicle industry.

Course content

The level 3 qualification consists of the following units:

  • Skills in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle engine faults
  • Knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle engine faults
  • Skills in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis system faults
  • Knowledge in diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle chassis faults
  • Skills in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle transmission and driveline faults
  • Knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle transmission and driveline faults
  • Skills in diagnosing and rectifying vehicle auxiliary electrical faults
  • Knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of vehicle auxiliary electrical faults

Additional Qualifications:
Whilst you are studying the Level 3 City and Guilds diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles you may also study

  • Bridge to Higher Education

Entry requirements

Learners must have completed a level 2 diploma motor vehicle qualification through either City & Guilds, IMI or ABC. Ideally learners will have completed a functional skill at level 2 for maths and English.

  • Skills in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis system faults - Assignments to assess practical and knowledge tasks
  • Knowledge in diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle chassis faults - Online multiple choice exam
  • Skills in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle transmission and driveline faults - Assignments to assess practical and knowledge tasks
  • Knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle transmission and driveline faults - Online multiple choice exam
  • Skills in diagnosing and rectifying vehicle auxiliary electrical faults - Assignments to assess practical and knowledge tasks
  • Knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of vehicle auxiliary electrical faults - Online multiple choice exam

Financial information

Are there any extra costs?
•  Pens, pencils, ruler, protractor, compass, eraser, line paper and a ring binder
•  Steel or composite toe safety shoes or boots (can be arranged by Brooklands College)
•  One piece Brooklands College Engineering Overalls (available on enrolment)
•  Safety glasses.

Cost for boots and overalls approximately £30.
All learners materials - £50

Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.

Future opportunities

At the end of the qualification you will have a highly regarded motor vehicle qualification that has provided you with the in depth skills and knowledge that you will need to gain employment in the exciting automotive world.

Apprenticeships are still an option at this stage as well. If you have studied the Bridge to Higher Education qualification with this level 3, it may be possible for you to progress onto the Level 4/5 Foundation Degree in Motorsport Engineering.
