Law AS/A Level at Benton Park School
LAW01 (Unit 1) – Law making and the legal system.
3 main topics: Parliamentary law making Delegated legislation Statutory interpretation
LAW02 (Unit 2) – The concept of liability
3 main topics: Civil courts and other forms of dispute resolution Criminal courts and lay people The judiciary
LAW03 (Unit 3): Criminal Law
(Fatal and non-fatal offences against the person) Includes studying the law around murder, manslaughter, non-fatal offences and the legal defences of these crimes.
LAW04 (unit 4): This unit is in two parts:
Criminal Law (Offences against property) Includes studying the law as it relates to theft, robbery, criminal damage and blackmail and the legal defences against these crimes. Concepts of Law Includes looking at law and morals, judicial creativity and law and morals, judicial creativity and law and justice.
Access to the Sixth Form is based on prior academic achievement, behaviour and attendance records. Students must attain at least 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths. Some subjects may have specific criteria.
There is a 1hr 30min exam for each unit.
Each exam is worth 50% of the AS qualification.
If students choose to continue to A-Level, they will count as 25% of the final A-Level
There are numerous pathways that students of Law can follow and the qualification sets students up well for continuing their studies and entering the world of work.
Further study of Law at university with a view to entering the legal profession.
Further study of subjects such as Forensics, Psychology, Sociology or other subjects where an understanding of legal frameworks is useful.
Legal apprenticeships or other entry level jobs in the legal sector (for example, legal executive or court clerk)
