English Literature AS & A Level at Bebington High Sports College

Course description

English Literature offers you a varied experience investigating a wide range of literary text, delivered by a highly-qualified team of teachers. It is a fun and easy to understand course with high academic respect. You will discover modern poets to classics texts from Shakespeare and acquire skills to analyse and evaluate a range of texts to enhance your understanding of the subject.

Course content

There are a total of four units in the course - two at AS and two at A2:

AS course consists of two units of work:

  • Unit 1: Aspects of narrative Students study two novels and two poetry texts.
  • Unit 2: Dramatic Genres Students study two plays and produce two pieces of coursework.

A2 course consists of two units of work:

  • Unit 3: Texts and Genres Students study two gothic texts in preparation for their exam.
  • Unit 4: Further and independent reading Students produce two pieces of coursework.

Entry requirements

Grade C or above in GCSE English/English Literature.


Each year will be assessed by one examination and two pieces of coursework.

There is a large variety of degree courses that can be studied once English has been taken. Studying English Literature develops a wide range of transferable skills which means English students are highly employable with excellent further education and career prospects.

This course develops independent study skills that are vital to further education. The subject is a popular option as the texts studied are engaging and thought provoking. Students achieve good results, make significant progress and develop key skills. The success rate is very high and all students achieve their target grades.
