CDT Product Design A level at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School
Product design encourages pupils to take a broad view of technology and design.
This course will help develop a pupil's capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing.
Pupils will have an opportunity to work with and study a variety of resistant materials so that they will understand the working characteristics, physical properties, cost and availability which influence the choice of materials in design situations.
Students will complete 2 AS level units and 2 A2 level units:
Unit 1 - Materials and Components, and Design and Marketing influences on Products
2 hour Examination (50% of total AS marks)
Materials and Components - Investigate natural and manufactured materials and methods of construction.
Design and Marketing influences on Products - Develop a broader understanding of how design effects change on civilization and how customers influence design and product life cycle.
Unit 2 - Design and Make Project
Coursework (50% of total AS marks)
Pupils to identify a user need and design and manufacture a product to satisfy that need.
Unit 3 - Processes and Manufacture
2 hour Examination (25% of total A Level marks)
Industrial anc commercial practices, Product manufacturing. Classification of materials. Re-design of existing products.
Unit 4 - Design and Make Project
Coursework (25% of total A Level marks)
Pupils to design and manufacture a project to satisfy a recognised user's need.
It is preferred that candidates should have achieved a Grade 'C' in either GCSE Graphic Products or GCSE Resistant Materials. However pupils who have not studied Design and Technology at GCSE will also be considered.
Pupils should have reasonable ICT, drawing and making skills.
Product design is an excellent foundation for the folliowing career paths:-
