Level 1 Diploma in Painting & Decorating at Bournville College

Course description

This is a basic introductory course covering the practical and job related knowledge required for a career in painting and decorating. This course is aimed at school leavers or at those wishing to enter the construction industry for the first time. The Foundation Award gives a good grounding in a trade with progression onto Level 2.

Course content

The course consists of both practical and written units which must be completed to the awarding body criteria.

These include:
Health, safety and welfare in construction
Principles of construction work
Erecting and dismantling access equipment
Preparing surfaces for decoration
Applying paint systems by brush and roller to non-complex surfaces
Hanging foundation papers and plain papers
Produce specialist decorative finishes

Entry requirements

A minimum of GCSE grade D in English and Maths. You should be enthusiastic and committed to success within this diverse, exciting and expanding industry. You need to enjoy working with people and be prepared to work in a wide range of environments.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on a continuous basis throughout the course. Assessments will be predominantly practical in nature. However, each practical unit has a written job-knowledge paper associated with the skills for that unit.  You will also be required to complete 2 written assignments during the course.

Future opportunities

On successful completion you may apply to continue your studies in Painting and Decorating at level 2.
