Travel and Tourism Diploma 1 at The Manchester College

Course description

Ideal for anyone who wants to find out more about the travel and tourism industry and everything it entails, this Level 1 Diploma will give you a general introduction to the whole sector and help you develop the skills needed to progress onto Level 2. You’ll get to combine both practical skills work and knowledge development as you study a range of subjects that relate directly to the industry. You’ll be looking at all the different kinds of airlines in operation today, including schedule, charter and low cost, and you’ll learn all about the important role that the air cabin crew plays. Focusing on holiday destinations, you’ll explore the role of the overseas resort rep and the kinds of customer service they’re responsible for providing. You’ll even get to research a number of UK travel destinations! We are also proud to be an official member of the Institute of Travel and Tourism.

No formal entry requirements. We may ask you to show us previous work or show that you are committed to study


There are no specific end-of-year exams for this course; instead you’ll be assessed in a number of different ways including controlled assignments and role plays, practical demonstrations, written coursework and group presentations.

Future opportunities

Once you’ve completed this Level 1 Diploma in Travel and Tourism, you’ll be able to advance onto the Level 2 course with us here at The Manchester College. You could also take other Level 2 diplomas such as Air Cabin Crew or the Aviation Package if you prefer. As you develop your knowledge and expertise further, you’ll be learning all the skills you need to succeed in any number of careers in the travel and tourism industry. (link to relevant career page) This could include working in hotel operations and customer service with a tour operator, flying the skies as cabin crew, or helping people book their holidays as a travel agent.

    • Wythenshawe Campus was opened in 2010 and offers a wide range of courses for school leavers and adults, including construction and motor vehicle. The campus is built to be environmentally friendly and has innovative technology to save energy and re-use resources. These include solar panels, wind catchers for natural ventilation and rainwater harvesting tanks.

      Local area

      Wythenshawe is a suburb of south Manchester. Wythenshawe Campus is built in the centre of the community, 15 minutes’ walk from the civic centre. The campus has it own gardens and places to sit outside, while Wythenshawe itself has several large parks and woodlands. The civic centre has a supermarket, shops, post office and fast food chains and there are some smaller shops opposite the campus. The campus is just over two miles from Wythenshawe Park; a beautiful green space with community farm and historic buildings.
