A Level Latin/ Classics at Grindon Hall Christian School - GHCS
This course will allow you to either study Latin or Classics, which combines modules of language with other modules of history, archaeology or literature in order to gain a broad overview of the ancient world. Both subjects provide in-depth study of this key period of history and its influence on our own social development.
Modules available for selection at AS and A2 include
· Latin Language
· Latin Verse and Prose Literature
· Archaeology: Mycenae and the Ancient World
· Homer’s Odyssey and Society
· Roman Society and Thought
· Greek Tragedy in its Context
· Greek Historians
· City Life in Roman Italy
· Roman Britain: Life in the Outpost of Empire
· Art and Architecture in the Greek World
· Comic Drama in the Ancient World
· Virgil and the World of the Hero
· Greek History: Conflict and Culture
· Roman History: the Use and Abuse of Power
Minimum entry requirements are in line with the School’s admission policy, but at least a grade B in GCSE Latin is recommended. Grade B in English and History would be considered in order to study Classics.
Assessment takes place at both AS and A2 level, and you will sit one exam for each module. Each paper is equally weighted and lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. There is no coursework in any of these modules.
Higher Education Opportunities
Classics or Latin can be studied in their own right at university, or as part of a combined honours course, such as Classics and English or Classics and Modern Foreign Languages.
Classics offers many transferable skills, and so is highly valued in the workplace, particularly in fields like Journalism, Law, Education, and Civil Service – indeed, any career that requires you to process and evaluate key information.
You can download the specification for both courses and sample assessment material (past exam papers) from www.ocr.org.uk. Each module has specimen papers, as well as an overview of the course and its different options. You should look carefully at these before making a decision.
Complementary subjects at A Level
English, History, Divinity and French.
