Course description

Brief Outline

This course will allow you to either study Latin or Classics, which combines modules of language with other modules of history, archaeology or literature in order to gain a broad overview of the ancient world. Both subjects provide in-depth study of this key period of history and its influence on our own social development.

Modules available for selection at AS and A2 include

·         Latin Verse and  Prose Literature

·         Archaeology: Mycenae and the Ancient World

·         Homer’s Odyssey and Society

·         Roman Society and Thought

·         Greek Tragedy in its Context

·         Greek Historians

·         City Life in Roman Italy

·         Roman Britain: Life in the Outpost of Empire

·         Art and Architecture in the Greek World

·         Comic Drama in the Ancient World

·         Virgil and the World of the Hero

·         Greek History: Conflict and Culture

·         Roman History: the Use and Abuse of Power

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements are in line with the School’s admission policy, but at least a grade B in GCSE Latin is recommended. Grade B in English and History would be considered in order to study Classics.  

Assessment

Assessment takes place at both AS and A2 level, and you will sit one exam for each module. Each paper is equally weighted and lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. There is no coursework in any of these modules.

Future opportunities

Higher Education Opportunities

Classics or Latin can be studied in their own right at university, or as part of a combined honours course, such as Classics and English or Classics and Modern Foreign Languages.

 

Job prospects

Classics offers many transferable skills, and so is highly valued in the workplace, particularly in fields like Journalism, Law, Education, and Civil Service – indeed, any career that requires you to process and evaluate key information.
