Course description

Why study Health and Social Care?

Course content

The course covers a wide range of topics from the field of Health and Social Care including Principles of Care which form the backbone of any job in this discipline, Effective Communication which plays a key role between all workers and clients and research into services and job roles which are relevant to the assignments studied.

HSC1: Promoting Quality Care and Communication

  • Factors affecting the quality of life of individuals
  • Principles of care
  • Caring skills and techniques
  • Communication
  • Barriers to communication and quality care
  • Rights and responsibilities of providers and individuals

HSC2: Promoting Good Health

  • Perspectives of health and well-being
  • Factors that affect health and well-being
  • Preventative measures to avoid ill-health
  • Job roles of key workers in health promotion
  • Techniques used within health promotion

Assessment

HSC1:

  • 40% of AS
  • This unit will be assessed by an 1½ hour external exam paper containing short-answer questions, structured questions and free response questions.

HSC2:

  • 60% of AS
  • This unit will be internally assessed as a coursework portfolio on a small-scale health campaign which will be carried out by the student in school or in a local care setting e.g local primary school.
