German A Level at Collingwood College

Course description

Students develop their German language skills through the study of topics at the same time as increasing their knowledge and understanding of grammar and structure.

Course content

The course is based around four themes that address a range of social issues and trends, as well as aspects of the political and artistic culture of Germany and German speaking countries.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C (or equivalent) including Grade B in German.


Paper 1 : Listening, reading and translation
1 hour and 50 minutes - written examination
Weighting: 40% of A level

Paper 2: Written response to works and translation
2 hours and 40 minutes - written examination
Weighting: 30% of A level

Paper 3: Speaking
Between 21 and 23 minutes - internally conducted
Weighting: 30% of A level

Future opportunities

An A level pass in a language is highly regarded by universities, and is particularly useful for progression into Arts degree courses as well as language courses. As a future career, a language degree opens up a wealth of opportunities in many professions where a language skill is a vital add-on advantage.
