Travel and Tourism AS Edexcel at Sandown Bay Academy
Travel and Tourism… •sustains over 2 million jobs in the UK (5% of the total workforce) •is forecast by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) to grow globally at an average rate of 4.1% over the next five years •Virgin Galactic plans to offer space tourism flights to the paying public within five years… Students of our GCE in Travel and Tourism will study six units, and the majority of the work is assessed through coursework. Learners will develop a more critical understanding of travel and tourism and the connections between its different sectors, resulting in a more holistic view of the industry and an appreciation of its global and dynamic nature. They will also develop: •an appreciation of the diversity and complexity of the travel and tourism industry •practical and technical skills relevant to the industry •an understanding of the issues that are affecting the travel and tourism industry. In the AS units you will learn about: - Unit 1 The Travel and Tourism Industry (Compulsory) - Unit 2 The Travel and Tourism Customer (Compulsory) - Unit 3 Destination Europe (Optional) - Unit 4 Destination Britain (Optional) - Unit 5 Travelling Safely (Optional) - Unit 6 Resort Operations (Optional) ASSESSMENT: You will have a written exam in the form of a question and answer booklet for Units 1 and 5. Each exam will last one and a half hours. For all other units, you will be assessed by coursework. For some of the units, you will be able to choose the type of organisation or sector of the industry you want to study in more depth.
You would benefit most from a GCE in Travel and Tourism if you have one or more of the following: - a profile of GCSEs at grade A*-C which could include GCSE Leisure and Tourism (Double Award) - other level 2 qualifications such as GNVQ Intermediate Leisure and Tourism or Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism You should also have an interest in the diverse and dynamic travel and tourism industry.
POSSIBLE PROGRESSION: The GCE in Travel and Tourism qualifies for UCAS points so if you complete it successfully you could move on to study for a degree or BTEC Higher National Certificate or Diploma in a related subject. You could progress to Modern Apprenticeships in Travel Services or to relevant employment. You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Travel and Tourism, which could lead you onto higher education, BTEC Higher Nationals or NVQ Levels 3 and 4 in areas of travel and tourism such as Hospitality. With further training, you could go into a job related to the Travel and Tourism such as a Tourism Officer, Travel Agent or more general jobs in the travel and tourism sector either in the UK or another country. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the travel and tourism industry.
