Business: BTEC Diploma at New College Pontefract

Course description

These are specialist courses which focus on the education and training of students who are interested in a career in business.

They are vocational qualifications which mean that whilst providing one, two or three A-Level equivalent qualification in Business they also provide students with the opportunity to learn and develop skills for employment. They can also lead to further study in Business related fields at university.

You can follow a BTEC Business course at New College in one of three ways:

BTEC Extended Certificate which over 2 years is equivalent to 1 A-Level and will cover all of the core units plus an additional 2 units including, for example, health and safety at work.

BTEC Diploma which over 2 years is equivalent to 2 A-Levels and will cover all of the core units plus an additional 8 units including, for example, developing working in teams.

BTEC Extended Diploma which over 2 years is equivalent to 3 A-Levels and will cover all of the core units plus an additional 14 units including, for example, retail management.

Course content

The new BTECs are made up of mandatory and optional units. Mandatory units are assessed in three ways: by assignments that are set and marked by staff at New College, tasks that are set and marked by the exam board and written exams that are set and marked by the exam board. Optional units are set and marked by staff at New College.

Entry requirements

Level 4 in English Language and Level 4 in Maths.

What skills do I need?
In order to succeed in the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma/Diploma/ Extended Diploma in Business you need to be punctual, well organised and have good attention to detail. It helps if you are creative and you are a good time manager. Additionally you need to be able to work hard and meet deadlines.

How will I be taught?
The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma/ Diploma/ Extended Diploma in Business is a course that is delivered across two years.

You will be required to complete a coursework task for each unit approximately every two weeks, which could be made up of:

  • a written report
  • a display
  • a PowerPoint presentation
  • some role play
  • a web based task

 

You will usually be working on up to four units at once, with different members of staff.

As part of our commitment to extended learning you will be expected to use the College Moodle virtual learning environment ( VLE) outside of the classroom environment.

 

Private Study
You will be expected to do at least six hours private study a week. This work outside of the classroom will enable you to complete your coursework tasks and achieve your target grades.

What materials will I need to purchase?
Basic stationery is needed for the Diploma/ Extended Diploma. You will need to purchase pens, paper and a lever arch folder, along with dividers and ideally a USB/Memory stick.

As part of the course you will be expected to take part in a variety of educational visits.
These visits form an important aspect of the qualification, and experiences from these visits are regularly used to enable students to complete specific coursework tasks.

BTEC Business Studies is for you if: You are looking for an excellent introduction to a real business career or further studies. If you like doing coursework and not taking exams this subject is perfect for you.

BTEC Business Studies is not for you if: You are not prepared to work hard both in and outside of the lessons to produce imaginative coursework assignments.
