Course description

The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Media Make-Up (QCF) has been designed to enable you to learn all aspects of media make-up.

Course content

You will develop a sound knowledge and understanding of media make-up to enable you to perform your own salon services.

You will study a variety of skill units related to hair and make-up techniques used for media which include:

  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
  • Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
  • Promote products and services to clients in a salon
  • Design and apply face and body art
  • Instruction on make-up application
  • Apply make-up
  • Media make-up
  • Fashion and photographic make-up
  • Camouflage make-up

Entry requirements

Entry on to this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 2 qualification in beauty therapy or hairdressing and/or a successful skills test and interview.

You need to have a good educational background of three GCSE C grades including English and science, supported by a favourable school or work reference. Being creative and having a natural passion for Art is favourable.

It is of the utmost importance that you are a person who takes pride in your appearance and enjoys communicating with people. Enthusiasm, dedication, a mature attitude and competence in the use of the English language are prerequisites of this course.


Your personal tutor will discuss your progress with you at regular tutorials, practical assessments will be observed by an assessor and you will be expected to build a professional portfolio of evidence consisting of written assignments, work packs and Photographic Evidence.

Future opportunities

This qualification's structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a make-up artist.

It may lead learners directly into employment in the hairdressing, media make-up or beauty therapy industries as a stylist/therapist or to work as an independent stylist specialising in hair and media make-up. You may also choose to develop your skills further by undertaking Technical Level qualifications at Level 3, including:

  • Level 3 Award in Bridal Hairstyling (QCF)
  • Management in Theatrical Special Effects and Media Make-up Level 4

Within your programme of study you will also develop a range of techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for performance in further study or your working life.
