Modern Languages – French, German, Spanish (A Level) at Somervale School
Work will continue at Sixth Form Level on the four skills of listening speaking, reading and writing. A more in-depth study of grammatical structures will be undertaken, leading to a greater ability to manipulate the language for the purpose of selfexpression. Classes are conducted mainly in the foreign language and students are encouraged to contribute as much as possible to discussions. A variety of contemporary topic areas such as Youth Culture, Health & Fitness, Education & Employment and Environmental issues are studied as an introduction to aspects of the culture of the target language country.
- Unit 1 Students are rewarded for their ability to converse in on a general topic area that they have chosen in advance.
- Unit 2 Students are required to understand and convey their understanding of the foreign language texts and recordings. Students will also need to produce an essay to demonstrate an ability to manipulate the foreign language in continuous writing.
- Unit 3 Students are required to demonstrate the effectiveness of their foreign language skills through presenting and taking a clear stance on any issue of their choice.
- Unit 4 Students are required to demonstrate skills in the foreign language at an Advanced Level; writing and translation from English into the foreign language. Students are also required to demonstrate evidence of independent, Advanced-Level language reading and research, linked to an area of particular interest and the culture of a country where the foreign language is spoken.
B Grade at GCSE in the selected language.
