Music BTEC First Diploma Level 2 at St Helens College

Course description

With this course, you will cover all of the important aspects of music production.

You'll study everything from sequencing, producing a recording and composing for visual media to investigating digital and mobile music technology.

Course content

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Working In the music industry
  • Professional development in the music industry
  • Planning and creating a music product
  • Exploring computer systems used by musicians
  • Producing a musical recording
  • Investigating an area of music

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of two GCSEs at grade C and two at grade D.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.


You will be assessed through a number of practical and theoretical assignments, recordings and task analysis. There is also a final production project.

Financial information

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation

Future opportunities

Once you've completed this course, you'll have the opportunity to carry on studying at level 3, developing a higher level of music production skills.

After this, you may choose to study our FdA in Music Production and Sound Design, at University Centre St Helens, accredited by University of Chester.

In the future, when you're ready to start your career, the variety of job roles is vast, offering everything from live sound engineer to studio technician.
