Heavy Vehicle Maintenance Level 1 Diploma at Bridgwater College

Course description

This course will interest you if you are 16–19 and have a keen interest in the Heavy Vehicle Automotive Industry, which could include the maintenance and repair of Commercial Vehicle Fleets or the exciting world of Truck Racing. Did you know that “a race truck is faster than a Porsche 911 to 100 mph?” If you would like to study on a full time basis this is the course for you, it can also help you into full time employment with an apprenticeship on completion of your qualification.

Course content

This is a very practical course offering you an introduction to the Heavy Vehicle Industry which leads to a full qualification. You will gain knowledge of a wide range of Heavy Vehicle systems such as the engine, transmission, steering, braking and suspension systems. You will also explore technological developments in the Truck Racing Industry, gaining an insight of how to modify a standard truck diesel engine. You will also use the advanced electronic equipment in the auto-lab to study the latest electrical principles of the Heavy Vehicle. The qualification is split between theory and practical sessions designed to equip you with the skills to gain employment or progress to the next level course.

Entry requirements

You will need GCESs in the D - G range or Basic Skills at Entry 3, a positive attitude and the potential and stamina to complete the programme and progress.  A keen interest in the Heavy Vehicle Automotive Industry which includes trucks, buses and coaches and an overall enthusiasm to succeed.


The qualification is achieved by demonstrating that you are both practically and theoretically competent. Your practical evidence will be developed in the college workshops throughout the year; sitting end of unit assignments, phase tests and on-line exams assesses the theory.

Future opportunities

  • Progress onto an IMIAL Level 2 Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles
  • Progress into employment, where students can return on a part time basis to study further on an apprenticeship programme
  • The Heavy Vehicle Industry usually pays 20% more to their qualified technicians than the light vehicle sector
