History AS at Charles Darwin School

Course description

Two units: Unit 1: Historical Themes in Breadth (option A2 The Norman Conquest and its impact on England 1066-1135; option A4 The Black Death to Great Revolt, England 1348-81). 1 hour 20 mins exam, externally assessed, January and June availability 50% total AS mark, 25% total GCE mark Unit 2: British History Depth Studies (Option B2 Poverty, Public Health and the Growth of Government in Britain 1830-75) Exams available January and June 50% of total AS marks, 25% of total GCSE marks Students will be required to write critically and in depth. They will need to demonstrate their understanding of the past through analysis, explanation and by making substantiated judgments.

Entry requirements

Grade B or above in English and history GCSE. There is no requirement to have completed history at GCSE but all candidates must have good GCSEs and a high level in English.

Future opportunities

A history qualification will enable you to access a university place and is a sought after requirement for courses in law, criminology, journalism, social work and administration, politics and government; it is also highly regarded by employers such as the police, the Ministry of Defence, library service, broadcasters and leisure industry.A willingness to read extensively A willingness to commit study time beyond school hours An understanding of political concepts and ideas, i.e. watch/read the news; be able to relate current events to past historical experiences
