AS/A2 Level History at Burton and South Derbyshire College

Course description

The course focuses on key aspects of British, European and American History in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. Significant events, people, and issues are studied which lead to a greater understanding of the modern world. In the first year you will study American History, with a focus on the Civil Rights Movement and the war in Vietnam. You will then expand on this knowledge in year 2 through a coursework unit. The other specialist area in year one is that of Britain and Warfare from the Crimean to the First World War. Within the second year you will also study Germany from the period of 1900, through to the Nazi regime, including the persecution of the Jews and the idea of the “Final Solution”. AS There is a trip to The Imperial War Museum London. A2 There is a trip to Auschwitz concentration camp.

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, one of which must be in English. GCSE History is not required.

Future opportunities

In combination with other A Levels you could do a Degree. The study of History teaches understanding of people, enquiry skills, the ability to read documents, communication skills and information handling. History is an ideal and important basis for many
