Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at Collingwood College

Course description

Students will develop their interest and enjoyment in Drama and Theatre both as a participant and as an informed member of an audience. They will gain insight into theatre processes and develop their understanding and appreciation of the significance of social, cultural and historical influences on the development of Drama and Theatre. Students will work practically with other students to explore a range of different theatre genres, practitioners and texts, as well as developing their skills as a performer and director.

Course content

Unit 1: Live Production Seen and Prescribed Play
Show knowledge and understanding of one published play and one performance in relation to the ways in which style, form, dramatic structure and characterisation can be interpreted and realised.

Unit 2: Presentation of Extract from a Play
Show their understanding of one influential practitioner who has made a significant contribution to theatre practice through a scripted performance.

Unit 3: Further Prescribed Plays
Show knowledge of two published plays, one of which is pre-twentieth century and one which is twentieth century or contemporary.

Unit 4: Presentation of Devised Drama
Create and realise an original drama using the theatrical style of their choice.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*- C (or equivalent) including English.

Assessment

Unit 1: Live Production Seen and Prescribed Play
Written paper – 1 hour 30 minutes, two questions
Weighting: 30% of A level

Unit 2: Presentation of Extract from a Play
Practical Performance
Weighting: 20% of A level

Unit 3: Further Prescribed Plays
Written paper – 2 hours, two questions
Weighting: 30% of A level

Unit 4: Presentation of Devised Drama
Practical Performance
Weighting: 20% of A level

Future opportunities

Students studying Drama and Theatre Studies A level move on to a variety of university courses generally within the Arts or some opt to audition for places at Drama School.
