Physical Education A level at Wilmslow High School

Course description

Studying AS or A Level Physical Education will give you a fantastic insight into the amazing world of sports performance. Not only will you have the chance to perform or coach a sport through non – exam assessment component, you will also develop a wide-ranging knowledge into the how and why of physical activity and sport. The combination of physical performance and academic challenge provides an exciting opportunity to students. You can perform, and then through the academic study gain the knowledge to improve yours and others’ performance or coaching through application of the theory.

All areas of content are now compulsory. As such you will receive a well –rounded and full introduction to the world of PE, sport and sports science. This complete grounding in the subject provides a fantastic base for you to build when you move on to higher education, employment or further training. Students will have the opportunity to develop a wide-ranging set of key skills, including communication using appropriate language, dealing with pressure, split-second decision making, interpreting and analysing data, as well as analysing and evaluating performances so improvements can be made.

Component 3 – Performance with Physical Education
Learners will be required to undertake two parts within this component:

Part 1: Performance or coaching of a sport or activity from approved DfE list.

Part 2: Evaluation of Performance for Improvement (EPI). This does not have to be the same sport undertaken in part 1, although it can be.

Entry requirements

Grade B at GCSE level Physical Education, although a grade A would be preferred. Grade B at English Language and / or Biology would also be helpful on the course. For students who have not studied Physical Education at GCSE but who wish to take up AS Level Physical Education in the Sixth Form, grade C at English Language is a minimum requirement although a grade B would be preferred. Candidates must demonstrate absolute commitment to improving their performance in their chosen activity. This usually involves regular participation in school teams and / or sports clubs.
