Physics A Level at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*

Course description

Physics is at the forefront of our understanding of how the world works and what makes the universe tick. Within this course, which is rich in practical work, you will develop your analytical skills and learn about a wide range of scientific concepts and current thinking.

Course content

Physics is the study of the whole range of science dealing with matter and energy and the relationships between them. It is a science subject, so practical work is an important element and will be assessed throughout the course leading to a Practical Endorsement alongside your A level. Module 1: Development of practical skills. Module 2: Foundations of physics. Module 3: Forces and motion. Module 4: Electrons, waves, and photons. Module 5: Newtonian world and astrophysics. Module 6: Particles and medical physics. At least two hours each week will be practical work based in a laboratory.

Entry requirements

At least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths, plus grade 6 (grade BB) or higher in Additional and Core Science (or grade 9–7 (grade A*–B) in GCSE Physics) and grade 9–7 (A*–B) in Maths. The study of A Level Maths or an alternative level 3 maths course.

Assessment

Tutors work closely with students to ensure they reach their full potential.

 

Future opportunities

With a qualification in Physics you could go on to Higher Education, studying Physics or one of the other sciences or related subjects, or work in science-based industry, or engineering.
