History AS & A2 Level (AQA) at Crossley Heath School

Course description

History is changing. But just as each generation looks at the past afresh, so the way the subject is taught develops over time.

September 2015 sees the launch of the new A level specifications for History. The new regulations for AS and A-level History includes a requirement to study:

• the history of more than one country or state

• significant individuals and events and a range of historical perspectives, such as political, economic, social, religious and cultural

• topics from a chronological range of at least 200 years

• a minimum of 20% British history.

For the A-level, students must also carry out a historical enquiry, based

on an independently researched topic agreed with teaching staff.

Course content

At Crossley Heath we will draw on the experience and expertise of our teaching staff in the History department to deliver the following course;
Component 1: Breadth Study -The Quest for Political Stability: Germany, 1871–1991
Component 2: Depth Study -Wars and Welfare: Britain in Transition, 1906–1957
Component 3: Historical Investigation (Personal Study) – this will be from the 16th or 17th century to meet the requirement that A-level students must cover a chronological range of at least 200 years.

Entry requirements

You will need to have attained at least a B in GCSE History.

The study of History helps to develop reasoning skills, historical imagination and empathy.
History is very well regarded by universities and employers for all types of careers.
The course emphasises the critical use of original source material, a good life skill.
The course will help you develop your written skills, training you to present reasoned and well-informed arguments.
