Applied Science BTEC Level 2 at Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College

Course description

BTEC Firsts are QCF Level 2 qualifications designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment. The qualifications also provide career development opportunities for those already in work. This course includes a series of practical and theoretical topics from biology, chemistry and physics giving you enough depth and breadth to continue onto a career or course in many fields of science.

Whilst on the course, you will study 6 units such as:

  • Biotechnology Procedures and Applications;
  • Working in a Science-Based Organisation;
  • Biology and Our Environment;
  • Energy and Our Universe;
  • Chemical Analysis and Detection;
  • Health Applications of Life Science;
  • The Living Body;
  • Applications of Physical Science;
  • Chemistry and Our Earth.

Entry requirements

2-4 GCSEs grade D or above (inc.English or Maths, or FS Level 1) Or Vocational level 1 Applied Science with FS English and FS Maths at level 1 and recommendation from tutor.

Assessment

All assignments are scenario based to provide a vocational focus contextualising the work environment. Each assignment structure groups similar themed criteria together and where appropriate shows progression Pass, Merit or Distinction criteria. The assessment approach allows a greater flexibility for assessment for learning, where throughout the course learners can get feedback on their progress as they provide evidence to complete the assessment and grading criteria.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of a BTEC First qualification, learners can progress to or within employment and/or continue their study in the same or related vocational area. There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in the appropriate vocational sector and it is suitable for those who have decided that they wish to enter a particular area of work. Some learners may wish to gain the qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment or to progress to a Level 3 programme.

Where will this course take you? Most of the students who completed the Level 2 progress on to the Level 3 courses with an intention of doing a degree in a science related area later or NVQs such as Laboratory Science. Work in the field of science or an Apprenticeship.
