Academy - Andrew Flintoff Cricket at Derby College

Course description

The Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy programme gives aspiring young cricketers and cricket coaches the opportunity to develop their cricket and coaching skills while studying academic qualifications in Sport to enhance their career prospects.
The College‚Äôs partnerships with Activate Sport, the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy and local cricket clubs enable learners to benefit from the expertise of highly qualified and respected coaches, which enhances the sport-focussed curriculum.
Candidates will look to develop as cricket coaches - not just players - in order to find employment in cricket development on successful completion of the programme.
The Academy is open to Level 2 and Level 3 learners, dependent on their entry qualifications and suitability.

Course content

The Academy includes:
  • A dedicated training calendar
  • Access to AoC Sport cricket competitions
  • A comprehensive competitions programme
  • Technical and tactical coaching
  • Psychological, physiological and lifestyle management
  • Strength and conditioning support

The course will follow the content for the Sport Coaching and Development study programme.  Poor performance on the academic part of the course will result in you being removed from the Academy.

The Academy cricket training will be held over three days per week.  You will be expected to attend every training session as well as every academic lesson. Access to GCSE resits will be prioritised over your access to training.

Entry requirements

Applications are welcomed from individuals who regularly participate in cricket and who show a desire and willingness to develop their sporting and coaching performance.
Entry to the Level 3 Sport qualification requires candidates to have a minimum of five GCSEs at A*- C grades (including English and Maths).
It is also possible to study at Level 2 and re-sit your GCSE in Maths or English while at the Academy.

Assessment on the study programme will be continuous over the year. Assessment methods will vary depending on the subjects delivered. See the Sports Coaching and Development pages for further details.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course, learners may wish to progress to the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching at Derby College or to seek employment within the sport and leisure sector, notably with the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy or Activate Sport.

For learners studying on Level 2 programmes, progression to Level 3 is dependent on your successful achievement of any GCSE resits taken.
