Mathematics AS Level at South Wirral High School

Course description

A Level Mathematics covers a wide range of mathematical knowledge and skills. The course is covered over two years, usually. The first year enables students to gain AS Mathematics; the second year goes on to cover the work which enables students to gain A2 Mathematics. Both courses are recognized by Universities and Colleges.

Course content

Two core Maths units comprising:

  • Algebra & Functions
  • Co-ordinate geometry
  • Differentiation & Integration
  • Trigonometry
  • Sequences and series
  • Exponentials & Logarithms

One applied module, usually statistics comprising

  • Numerical methods
  • Probability
  • Binormal distribution
  • Normal distribution
  • Estimation
  • Correlation and regession

Two further core modules

  • Algebra and functions
  • Trigonometry
  • Exponentials and logarithms
  • Differentiation and integration
  • Numerical methods
  • Sequences and series
  • Vectors
  • M/ul>

    One applied module - Decision Maths comprising of:

    • Simple ideas of algorithms
    • Graphs and networks
    • Linear programming
    • Mathematic modeling

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade B or above gained at Higher level.
AS & A2 Mathematics will support your work in other subjects eg.Physics, Biology, Chemistry and DT

Assessment

All units are externally set and assessed. All carry equal weighting and are 1 1/2 hour written papers with a total of 75 marks
