Fashion Retail Level 3 Diploma at Basingstoke College of Technology

Course description

On this course you will be able to design retail displays and create them in our retail training and learning centre. During the year you will explore the fashion retail marketplace, investigate market research and recognise product branding. You will look at management and communication skills, store operations, marketing, buying and visual merchandising. This course is designed to give students a nationally recognised qualification in fashion retail and business, providing the knowledge, skills and understanding required to gain employment within the industry.

Course content

This innovative programme combines the study of fashion retail with the principles of business. Students will complete both a Level 3 Fashion Retail Diploma and a Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business Studies.


The course covers a range of topics including:

Fashion Retail Diploma Mandatory Units

  • Management skills for retail
  • Store operations for retail
  • Buying and merchandising for fashion retail
  • Visual merchandising for successful fashion retail
  • Professional development in retail management


Optional units to include fashion promotion and developing retail brands.

Subsidiary Diploma in Business Mandatory Units

  • The business environment
  • Business resources
  • Introduction to marketing
  • Business communication


Optional units include managing a business event and fashion retailing.

Attendance of 100% is necessary in order to complete the course.

To enhance employment opportunities the course may also have additional qualifications built into the programme.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grade A*-C including English, Maths and preferably Science, or a Level 2 Diploma (Merit).  A portfolio of work will be considered in place of one GCSE. 

An interest in working in the fashion retail sector is important.


The assessment approach ensures learners have a fulfilling experience in developing their personal attributes as well as the skills and knowledge to excel in the fashion industry and develop entrepreneurial talent.

The course is assessed by practical and written assignments/tests using a variety of methods which directly relate to the type of work students could obtain on completion of the course.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.
