Business BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 at Bolton College

Course description

Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study.

This course has been designed to introduce you to the world of business. You will study pathways including Business Administration, Business Enterprise and Working Effectively in Business.

As part of the programme you will investigate business practices and create business ideas, as well as develop essential business and administrative skills.

Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

Course content

What you'll learn

This course has been designed to cover all aspects of the business spectrum, ensuring you have a good understanding of all things business as well as allowing you to identify areas of specialism.

The course is delivered over two years. In Year 1 you will study for your 90 Credit Diploma (equivalent to 1 1/2 A-Levels) and study units including:

  • The Business Environment
  • Business Resources
  • Introduction to Marketing
  • Business Communication
  • Recruitment & Selection in Business
  • Business Accounting

On successful completion of the 90 Credit Diploma, you will progress on to the full Extended Diploma programme (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) and study units including:

  • ICT in Business
  • Managing a Business Event
  • Developing Teams in Business
  • Starting a Small Business
  • Business & Ethics
  • Law

We encourage our students to continue their English & maths study to Level 3.

Elements of study

Your programme consists of the following elements:

  • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
  • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
  • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work)
  • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life)
  • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

Entry requirements

We ask that you have four GCSEs grades 8-4 (A-C), including English and Maths, or a Merit-grade BTEC Extended Certificate Level 2. We will also invite you to attend an informal interview and provide a satisfactory school reference.


For each unit you will complete a number of assignments and activities. These will include a mixture of:

  • Presentations
  • Observations
  • Written reports
  • Professional discussions
  • Group assessments
  • Practical activities
  • Role Plays

Financial information

Government-funded Further Education courses are usually free if you are aged 16-18 and are a British or European Union resident.  Financial help is available for some students, whose families are on low income. Future opportunities

After you have completed the course you could progress on to a higher education course at college or university, or explore the possibility of doing a Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4).

Following further study you could work as:

  • A Management Consultant where you can earn between £25,000 and £30,000 a year, depending on experience.
  • An Office Manager, where you can earn between £20,000 and £30,000 a year.
  • A HR Officer, earning between £18,000 and £25,000, with Managers earning up to £48,000.

Ofsted Grade 2 ‘Good’

Ofsted also agrees; in February we were inspected and graded 2 for ‘Good’. Ofsted highlighted the fact that our learners develop good employability and personal skills and that a high proportion progress to Apprenticeships, employment or Higher Education.


We want to give you a positive experience at College and a rounded view of the industry you could one day be working in. So, during your time at College, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a range of activities, including:

  • Visit to Land Rover Experience, Liverpool
  • Guest speaker sessions from local businesses
  • Working to live business briefs including Warburtons and the NHS


The College will support you throughout your time here; you will receive personal support from both your tutor and your Learning & Development Mentor. Support is also available from our dedicated Student Services team for personal, financial and careers guidance.

During their recent visit in February 2017, Ofsted commended the College for its provision of “well targeted information, advice and careers guidance, which meets individual needs and enables learners to make informed choices about the next steps in their learning and career”.
