German AS Level at South Wirral High School

Course description

The language is studied through various topic areas concerning life and society in Germany and other German-speaking countries.

Course content

A2 topics centre around the two main themes of Environmental Issues and Social and Political Issues. The course aims to further develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and to inform students about the society and culture of the countries studied. It also aims to enable students to express their own ideas with greater independence, confidence and accuracy through the correct use of German grammer. A high degree of grammatical accuracy and expertise is expected at AS and A2 level.

Entry requirements

GCSE Grade B or above gained through Higher course German.
GCSE Grade C or above in English & Maths

Assessment

There are four modules in total: 2 at AS and 2 at A2:

Unit 3 - Speaking: Conversation & Discussion (15-20mins // 20%)
Unit 4 - Listening, Reading & Writing (3 hours // 30%)

Combined with a range of other subjects, German can lead to careers in the following areas;

Further information

Students have regular contact with the school's German assistant to develop their confidence with spoken German.  The Internet is used to locate further information and to practice grammar and reading skills through interactive tasks online.
There are also opportunities to take part in trips abroad organized by the department (e.g. Munich)
