Physical Education AS/A2 Level at Christleton High School

Course description

 

We follow the OCR Advanced GCE Physical Education specification outline which takes a multidisciplinary approach, encouraging development of different methods of enquiry, with the focal point being the performer and the performance.

The specification is based on the interaction between the theory and practice of Physical Education.

Course content

 

At AS level candidates study the following:

UNIT G451 – Students to study 3 theoretical areas. These are Anatomy & PhysiologyAcquiring movement skills and Socio-Cultural Studies relating to participation in physical  activity.

UNIT G452 – Students to be assessed in two practical activities (one which can include coaching/officiating). They will also observe a live performance and consider factors that make for an effective and efficient performance.

 

At A2 level candidates study the following:

UNIT G453 – Students to study 3 theoretical areas. These include Historical studies of  Physical Education, Sports Psychology and Exercise & Sport Physiology.

UNIT G454 – Students will be assessed in one practical activity (either performing, coaching  or officiating). They will also observe a live performance and recommend appropriate  strategies for improving performance.

Entry requirements

 

At least five GCSEs at grade C or above. In addition, a grade B or above is expected in Physical Education (if studied) and a grade C in Science. Students will also have demonstrated a strong commitment to PE/Sport in KS4.

Assessment

 

AS Unit G451

An introduction to Physical Education, 2 hours, 30%

AS Unit G452

Acquiring, developing & evaluating practical skills in Physical Education, Continual & practical assessment , 20%

A2 Unit G453

Principles & concepts across different areas of Physical Education, 2 ½ hours, 35%

A2 Unit G454

The improvement of performance & the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education, Continual & practical assessment , 15%

 

Future opportunities

 

The course is based on the interaction between the theory and practice of Physical Education and provides an excellent foundation for students who wish to pursue careers such as in teaching and coaching, sports development, the leisure industry, recreational management, the health and fitness industry, professional sport, sport psychology, nutrition, physiotherapy and many others
