English Literature A-Level at Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey

Course description

Students study five units over two years: Unit 1: Prose and Drama (exam). Unit 2: Poetry post 1900 (exam). Unit 3: Poetry pre 1900 and unseen poetry (exam) Unit 4: Shakespeare (exam). Unit 5: Prose study (coursework).

Course content

Students study the following in year 1: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte OR Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. A Street Car Named Desire by Tennessee Williams OR Top Girls by Caryl Churchill. A selection of poems by Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes OR by Carol Ann Duffy and Philip Larkin. Students study the following in year 2: A selection of poems by Christina Rossetti. Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Two prose texts of the candidate’s choice: one pre 2000 and the other post 2000.

Entry requirements

5 A - C GCSE grades in different subjects, to include Maths at a grade C and English at a grade B or above.


The course is comprised of five units. Units 1-4 are all exam units; units 1, 3 and 4 are closed book exam. Unit 5 is coursework and candidates are expected to produce an essay of 2500-3500 words.

English Literature holds many opportunities for further study at university including English Literature, English Language, Drama and other subjects that require analytical and evaluative skills. Future careers include: teaching, publishing, writing and journalism.
