Drama A Level at Prior Pursglove And Stockton Sixth Form College
Drama is a very lively course which incorporates the practical study of set–texts from all eras of theatre as well as investigating the theory and practise of acting, directing and staging live theatre.
WHY STUDY DRAMA?
This course offers you the chance to perform scripted plays, devise your own productions and to analyse and review performances you have seen as an audience. You will also look at the theory and practise of key theatre practitioners who have had a large influence on the modern stage as we know it today, such as Stanislavski, Brecht and Artaud.
USEFUL SKILLS & INTERESTS
- The ability to plan and write good essays
- The ability to keep on-going, accurate and evaluative records of practical work
- The confidence to read aloud in front of large groups
- The confidence to participate in group practical work
The A Level course is a linear programme, and is divided into three components:
- Drama & Theatre
- Creating Original Drama
- Making Theatre
The students will study two set texts from different periods, and will consider the work of other theatre makers seen in live theatre performances. This component is assessed with a written examination at the end of the course.
Students will work in groups on the creation and presentation of a piece of original Drama, working as Actors, Directors or Designers. They will be assessed on their contribution to the devising process, their practical skills and their understanding of the work as expressed in a working notebook.
Students will explore the work of key Theatre Practitioners, and will apply their theories to workshop performances of three extracts from contrasting plays, one of which will be assessed by a visiting examiner. They will produce a written log of the work they undertake on all three extracts.
You need to have achieved at least a grade C, in GCSE English.
It is preferable that you have had relevant performance experience, but you don’t need to have taken Drama GCSE.
