Physics AS/A2 Level at Havelock Academy

Course description



Physics A level is a course for students who want to know about how the universe works, how fundamental particles and forces interact on Earth and beyond. Physics A-level students often wish to further study within the discipline of Physics, or pursue other Science-related choices. Physics is also a good support for study of mathematics or engineering at degree level.


Course content



AQA provide a list of practical activities that students must carry out. Exam questions will be based on these practicals.

AS and first year of A-level

1. Measurements and their errors,

2. Particles and radiation,

3. Waves,

4. Mechanics and energy,

5. Electricity,


Second year of A-level

6. Further mechanics and thermal physics,

7. Fields,

8. Nuclear physics,

Plus one option from:

Astrophysics, Medical physics, Engineering physics, Turning points in physics, Electronics.


Entry requirements



GCSE Core and Additional Science Grade B or above.

If completing Triple Science then at least two of the three qualifications at grade B or above.

GCSE Mathematics and English Language at a grade B essential.





Three 2-hour written examinations


Future opportunities



Degree course in any of the Physical based sciences, including Physics, Astrophysics, Particle Physics and Cosmology, Theoretical Physics and Nanoscale Physics.

These may allow graduates to pursue a career linked with Physics, such as research and development, a job in any of the related fields of physics, including astrophysics, biomedical physics or working within the energy sector to name but a few.
