Children's Play, Learning and Development BTEC level 3 Subsidiary Award at Enfield County School

Course description

This course is particularly appropriate for those with an interest in progressing to a career where they will be working with children in an early years-related field and who want to pursue this alongside other qualifications such as Level 3 BTEC National in Health & Social Care of A Levels

Course content

This is a vocational Level 3 qualification equivalent to one AS Level.  Students will study two units over one year.  This includes the core units:

Unit 1:  Child Development (External Exam)

Unit 2:  Play and Learning (Internal Assessment)

Work Experience in a range of childcare settings in an essential part of the course to give students the vocational experience they require to fully understand the course content.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 A* to C grades including English Language or BTEC First Diploma at Merit grade or above plus English Language GCSE at A* to C grade.


Students will be assessed through an exam at the end of the year and course work assignments for Unit 2.   Coursework will be internally marked and moderated and externally verified.

Future opportunities

Progression to Higher Education for professional or academic degree e.g. Degree in Children’s Nursing: Social or Youth work; Early Years Education: Sociology, Psychology.  Students can go directly into employment as a child care assistant and serve an apprenticeship to achieve their child care qualification, Children’s Health Care Assistants.  This course gives the underpinning knowledge for NVQ Level 3 and has been developed with employers to reflect the national child care standards
