Sport (Outdoor Adventure) - level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Buxton & Leek College

Course description

The Pearson BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport is a broad based National Vocational Qualification, which provides a detailed understanding of the Sports Industry. The qualification gives opportunity to begin studying for a range of sports related professions including careers in instruction, leadership & sports coaching. The course comprises of 19 units that are continually assessed via course work projects. It is vocational in nature combining theoretical and practical units. This qualification is equivalent to three A levels.

Entry requirements

Entry onto the programme can be via any of the following:

  • 4 GCSE passes grade ā€˜Cā€™ or above
  • Level 2 Qualification (equivalent to 4 GCSEs at Merit grade)

All entrants are interviewed prior to entering the course and entry can be gained where applicants demonstrate keenness, the ability to work hard and a willingness to be successful.

Assessment

This 2 year full time programme is assessed continuously via coursework in most units. A range of assessment methods are used including practical sports, written reports, work experience and investigations. There is a strong student centered approach to the course where all students are encouraged to develop the confidence to learn independently and gain relevant experience

Future opportunities

Upon completion you will be able to make informed choices regarding future employment opportunities such as: provision of individual/group sports activities, coaching and community development. As a valid alternative to A levels, BTEC Nationals can provide an entry route to higher education courses in sports related courses such as sports development and coaching, outdoor pursuits, leisure management, teacher training etc.

Further information

As part of the Sports course you will have the opportunity to take part in an educational outdoor activity based residentials to Snowdonia, Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. A variety of trips will be organised as part of the course including visits to Chill factore, outdoor activity centres and national parks. A range of additional vocational qualifications are available throughout the programme. These include: Basic Expedition Leader, RYA Powerboating level 2, Gold Duke of Edinburgh & first aid.

      The campus boasts a fine dining restaurant, hair and beauty salons and a bistro café area at The Dome. All the commercial operations are open to students, staff and the general public, helping to provide real world experiences.

      Our Skillsbase Training Centre, based at Harpur Hill on the outskirts of Buxton is the perfect location for motor vehicle, construction, logistics, warehousing and painting and decorating.
