Health Studies BTEC First Certificate or Diploma at Corby Business Academy

Course content

This is a practical work-related course.You will learn by completing projects and portfolios that are based on realisticworkplace situations and activities. It introduces you to the employment area you may decide you wish to go into once you have left education. It provides a good basis for more advanced work-related qualtfication such as NVQ,GCE,BTEC level 3 courses post 16.AIMSThis course is for anyone who is interested in working with people. Students will learn in a practical way with emphasis on a student -centered approach.Prepares students for progression to employment and/or further training in the early years(nursery nurse),health(nursing) and social care sectors through development of knowledge ,skills and understanding needed for work in these areas.Increases knowledge and understanding of the health and social care areas through the investigation and evaluation of a range of services and organisations.Visits will be organised to pre-school nurseries,care homes,health professionals,etc.Develops an awareness of the influence on an individual's health and well being and highlights the importance of motivation and support when improving health.Recognises the importance of the stages of development of an individual and their relationships.


This is by six portfolio units, one of which will be work experience in a health and social care placement. The two core units are:Communication and individual rights within the health and social care sectors.Individual needs within the health and Social Care sectors.

Future opportunities

Further Education: The subject area allows for progression onto the BTEC National course or the GCE Adavanced Levels Qualification. It is a route to the BTEC Nursery Nursing Course and related Child Development Courses.Employment: The Health and Social Care sectors are important employment sectors and the well developed personal skills (e.g. teamwork,problem solving,initiative) combined with work-related knowledge gained within GCSE means that students are suitable for recruitment, albeit at a junior level initially, in a range of fields.
